How To Build A "Backyard Putting Green"

You Will Need:

A shovel
A wheelbarrow
A compactor
Infill
Artificial Turf
Landscape edging

Instructions





Infill


1. Decide on the size and shape you want your backyard putting green to be.
2. Find a place with good drainage on your lawn where you would like to install your green.
3. Remove all debris from underneath where your putting turf will be laid.
4. Wet the dirt and compact it down until there are no indentations on the surface.
5. Add 2 inches of infill to the putting green area and compact it into place. Compact until footprints on the surface do not leave indentations. If the subsurface of the green is not at the desired level, add 2 more inches of compaction sand and repeat the process until the proper level is reached.
6. Install 2 to 3 cups in the base material by digging holes at least 2 inches wider than the cup and 6 inches deep. Set the cup in the middle and pour quick-drying concrete around the cup, leaving 1 inch of the cup exposed.

7. Check to make sure your surface is still smooth and then spread sand over the base material with a drop spreader. Sweep sand across the base.
8. Lay out the turf on the compacted surface and fasten the sections of turf together with tape or glue. Make sure the grain of the turf runs in the same direction.
9. Trim the turf to fit the subsurface of the green.
10. Spread infill sand over the green using a drop spreader. Once the infill is spread, brush the green well so the infill is properly spread. Repeat process until green is completely full of infill. At this point, infill should be at the tips of the turf.
11. Sweep the infill off the green, going across the grain.
12. Locate cup holes under the turf and cut the turf around inside of the hole with a knife. Trim the edges with scissors.
13. Roll the green. The amount of rolling will determine the speed of your putting green.
